Frequently Asked Questions
How old does my puppy have to be before coming to a class or having a consultation?
There is no specific age. However, before you come to a class, your dog must be vaccinated. If you would like to book a one-to-one consultation, any initial training will be done in the comfort of your home so you can start before your dog is vaccinated.
How do I know which class is suitable for my dog?
If your dog is under eight months, then they should start in the puppy class. If they are over eight months old but have yet to undertake any training with you, then they should start in the foundation class. If you are still unsure about which class which is suitable, then please do not hesitate to contact me
Will my dog be allowed off the lead during the classes?
At the start of each course, dogs will always be on leads. Long lines will be used as the course progresses, and where appropriate, some off-lead training will be completed. You should never take your dog off the lead, unless specifically directed to do so.
Will there be an appropriate opportunity for my dog to play with the other dogs?
Time will be dedicated to teaching appropriate socialisation, what this means, and how to implement effective socialisation routines.
What if my dog is nervous or aggressive around other dogs?
Before joining a group class you should have an initial one-to-one consultation in order for us to be able to ascertain exactly the extent of your dog’s challenges. We can then create a bespoke training plan for them which will help ensure they receive the help they need at a pace and in a space that is suitable for them.
How can I book a class/consultation with you?
To book a class or consultation, simply leave your details in the form below and I’ll reply within 24 hours. Alternatively, you can call or Whatsapp me on 07730 531 584
What sort of training methods are used?
We are committed to the principles of training through positive reinforcement. However, to ensure that your dog remains safe and does not develop unwanted or potentially dangerous habits, we also believe it is necessary for us, as the dog’s loving leader, to impose boundaries. Through training with Canine Success, your dog will learn quickly when rewards are delivered. We will never use methods that hurt your dog.
Do you have insurance?
Yes, the appropriate public liability and professional indemnity insurance is in place, which covers all aspects of dog training and behaviour. We are happy to provide you with a copy of our insurance certificate upon request.
My dog has a health condition. Can they still attend a class/consultation?
All cases are assessed on a case-by-case basis, so please call us to discuss the extent of your dog’s condition before booking a consultation or a course. We also advise you to speak to your Vet for their opinion as to whether they consider there is a reason why your dog should not attend a training consultation/course.
What do I need to bring to class?
Please bring with you the following:
- A fixed-length lead (so no flexi leads). The lead should not be more than 2 metres in length.
- A large bag of treats
- Some chews or a toy for them to have when they are not training
- A mat or towel for them to lie on
- Your dog!
I have a rescue dog; which class is right for them?
If your new arrival is a puppy, please attend one of the puppy classes. Otherwise, in the first instance, we recommend they attend the foundation class. Even if your new arrival has had some training, completing the foundation class can help settle your dog and establish a clear and consistent training routine.
I have an existing problem with my dog’s behaviour. Are classes suitable for me?
If you have an existing issue that requires help, please contact me on 07730 531 584 so we can discuss the problems you are experiencing. I will then be able to advise you whether it will be possible to work on those challenges in a group class or whether is more suitable to deal with the behaviour on a one-to-one basis before progressing into a group class setting.
When, and where are classes held, and how much do they cost?
Please see the group classes pages for the most up to date list of dates, locations, and prices
When do I need to pay for the classes/consultation
Unless otherwise agreed, all charges must be paid at least 7 days before the course commences or the date of the consultation
Will the classes/consultations be cancelled in bad weather?
Classes are held indoors and will not be cancelled until travelling is hazardous. In the event a one-to-one consultation is to be held outdoors, it will take place unless the weather is extreme and makes it inappropriate to do so. In such circumstances, alternative indoor venues will be considered. Any cancelled classes/consultations will be rescheduled as soon as possible.
